This past August I embarked on an unforgettable life journey. I joined 70,000 people on the Playa of Black Rock City, NV to experience Burning Man 2014. I’ve heard amazing stories of how incredible this adventure is, how it has the ability to change lives, to put a new view on life. Yes, indeed it changed my life, I reflected, I laughed, I cried, I spent time with amazing people, I let go of the past and came out with a new future. But let’s focus that for a future post where I’ll share my personal adventures more. This post isn’t about me, but about two men who decided to celebrate their love and commitment to one another. My last night on the Playa I had the pleasure of witnessing and documenting Matty & Peter’s wedding. I loved this wedding! Sunset on the Playa, the caravan style processional, the moving speeches. But I think the best thing about a Burning Man wedding is everyone is exactly who they are, exactly who they want to be, free of judgement, free of the pressures of society. This was the core of human connection and love.

I join my campmate, and one of Matty’s high school friends, Rj Kern, to document this beautiful event. We chose our favorite images together and compiled them into our post. You can check his page out at as well as see a number of other amazing Burning Man posts.

I remember being posed with a question… ” Would you rather shoot the wedding or enjoy it?”

To that I thought to myself, being a guest sounds so boring, I mean, lets face it. What would I do with myself!? Yes, it is kind of a dream for a wedding photographer to be a guest at a wedding, but I had a realization… Some of my happiest moments, the best relationships, connections with friends, and earliest memories of family have been surrounded by photography. So to this question, I responded, “Why not both?”

It was my cousins wedding day! Yes, the little girl I would play with at my Grand Parents house, running around the back yard paying soccer or going to the lake together, or the family christmas parties that we wore some amazing sweaters that, by todays definition might qualify for an ugly sweater party. Yes, this day was the day that this little girl has grown up, and is marrying the love of her life. Gene is in my mind, perfect for Janine, and I couldn’t be happier to have such a wonderful addition to our family.

Accompanied, by a good friend, RJ Kern, I couldn’t have done it with out you my friend. I couldn’t ask for a better day to enjoy a wedding surrounded by close friends, Family, doing what I love most, surrounded by the people I care about most. What a great day, congrats Janine and Gene!

Darby and Sean, what a perfect wedding day we had for your wedding.

I remember sitting there reminiscing to myself about the very first wedding I ever shot as a primary. It was at this very venue, The ceremony sight, the barn, all bringing back wonderful memories of where this crazy journey all started, yes, I love shooting a Chatfield Botanic Gardens in Littleton. While this venue will always hold a special place in my heart, it’s the people in life that truly make a mark on your soul. Sean and Darby Share that special little something that I just love to see in my clients that makes me smile. While perfect summer nights are alway nice, the evening greeted us with something more, a beautiful rain. Yes, yes, I’m sure you hear it time and again, rain on your wedding day is good luck. I think it’s just a great excuse for some cookies and milk, which yes, they did have milk in Martini Glasses. Thank you Sean and Darby for letting me document your special day, and I couldn’t be more happy to call you two friends.
